Niki Koutouzi’s residency project explores collective memory through the framework of the chorus (χορός), drawing on its historical role and function in Ancient Greek theatre, as well as its reinterpretations up to the present. Situated in the Athenian suburb of Nea Ionia, shaped by successive waves of migration, from the 1923 Asia Minor population exchange to contemporary border regimes, the research also engages with living traditions such as rebetiko (ρεμπέτικο), oral storytelling, embroidery, weaving, and ceramics. Through fieldwork and experimentation, Koutouzi will reimagine the chorus in a contemporary context, considering its potential as a poetic-political form through which collective memory can be revoiced.
