‘Glean’ contributes to the ongoing research and development of Adam’s expanded sculptural practice, which investigates how sculpture can communicate personal narrative, and the connection/disconnection between written and sculptural works. While at Yellow Brick, Adam explores the implications of sculptural processes of casting, breaking down and re-casting, together with biographical narrative as a tool for expanding upon and contextualising sculptural works within the frame of fragmented memory, absence, grief and the domestic. Adam’s practice is, in part, an archaeological dig – uncovering personal narratives and, in turn, depicting a contemporary material culture.
The materials collected within Adam’s practice become personal as well as environmental symbols, chosen for sentimental and personal significance – gifts from friends, family heirlooms or objects found during significant life moments. They speak of daily habits, trends, subcultural groupings, queer identity, and broader social systems and, of course, the cultural footprint of their city of origin. The physical work Adam produces is led by the location it is developed in and the materials that inhabit the space, developing, expanding and collapsing within each new location. For this residency with Yellow Brick, Adam allows the location and its materials to direct the outcomes of his sculptural practice.
