For their second residency at Yellow Brick, Assembled Patterns revisited their first interaction in Athens. Whereas their earlier work brought the exterior into the interior through audio and photographic material, they now shifted their focus to how exterior built space functions as a self-reproducing indicator of otherness. During two working periods, in December–January and September, they explored themes including; locality, publicness, and domain-specific effects and affects. In which, they investigated how certain types of built environments operate as thresholds between the solid identity of architectural form and the collective and individual functions it can produce. Through this spatial research, they circle around the conception of heterotopias—a neologism introduced by Michel Foucault in 1966. Heterotopia refers to a constructed space that is neither entirely private nor entirely public, but instead lies in between: an intermediate or mediating space where the continuity of time and experience is disrupted. In their work, the mirror plays an important role as an object of resonance—seemingly repeating itself within itself. Assembled Patterns challenge the assumption that nature can simply repeat itself, using the mirror as a metaphor. Here, the mirror is not seen as an echo of self-reflection, but as a figure for an other-world of embedded multiplicity.
Assembled Patterns is a co-authorized project by Evelyn Vanoverbeke and Aaron Daem founded in 2023. Operating between Brussels and Athens their practice takes the spatial and architectural conditions of these cities as a starting point to investigate the reciprocal relationship between the urban environment and the framework of representations it embodies. Their research and practice take shape through site-specific installations, audio works, and printed matter. Through these media, they explore how built space resonates—acoustically, cognitively, and sensorially.
